The reigning African Women's Footballer of the Year, Thembi Kgatlana, has scored Banyana Banyana's first ever goal at a World Cup and her effort is one for the history books.
Kgatlana showed her prowess when she curled the ball outside the eighteen-yard area to open South Africa's account at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup as they succumbed to a 3-1 loss to Spain.
Ironically, Benni McCarthy also netted Bafana Bafana’s first World Cup goal in France back in 1998 and 21 years down the line, 'Pikinini' as Thembi is affectionately referred to by her peers scores one for Banyana on the same French soil.
Kgatlana's goal would have been sweeter with a victory but the football gods were not on South Africa's side on the day.
Nonetheless, the goal itself will forever be remembered!
