New year’s resolutions get put to the test between the ABSA premiership log leaders Kazier Chiefs and second placed Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday the 23rd of January at Loftus Versfeld. The game is billed as a six pointer for both teams, which means everything is to play for.
The Phefeni boys come into this game after an impressive winning streak before the Christmas break. Amakhosi are on top of the league with 30 points, with the Brazilians trailling them by 5 points.
Pisto Mosimane’s boys have undone their good work so far this season by relinquishing their top spot to rivals Chiefs following a string of poor results toward the end of the year.
The match between Downs and Amakhosi has been postponed three times this season already and was originally scheduled for the 23 November 2013.
Both teams had players participating in the CHAN tournament but SAFA has agreed with both teams for their players to be released for the encounter, though that did not matter after Bafana were eliminated from the tournament.
Kaizer Chiefs had four players in the Bafana setup: Itumeleng Khune,TefuMashamaite, SiphiweTshabalala and Bernard Parker. Sundowns had the same number of players: Bryce Moon, Tebogo Langerman, Hlompho Kekana and Katlego Mashego.
Sundowns have been preparing for the game by travelling to Zambia for a number of friendlies while Chiefs have also been getting their players back to full fitness ahead of the resumption of the league.
A win for either side could set the tone for 2014 – will Chiefs take a big step towards retaining their crown, or can Sundowns get their momentum back?
