Kaizer Chiefs continued from where they left off last season on Tuesday night against Bidvest Wits.
The Glamour Boys concluded last campaign with a winless streak, and they did not disappoint the opposition fans on the opening day of the 2016/17 season. Wits beat Chiefs 2-1 to see Steve Komphela writing history with Amakhosi, losing the opening game since God knows when. But what looked worrying as a Khosi was how Chiefs played on the night. We lacked rhythm and direction, and had no unity on the field. Players like Bernard Parker, George Lebese and George Maluleka looked confusing. They had no connection from midfield, and Parker looked lonely at the front.
We also lacked tactical awareness, and we just played randomly out there. Bra Steve seemed dumbfounded when Wits went into the lead. There was no plan for an immediate response. As I watched two of the Big Three in SA, Sundowns and Pirates, I got really worried. Pitso opted to field a second string side against Enyimba on Friday in the Caf Cl, even though they lost they looked better that what we have at Naturena. Pirates were also a class above us in terms of quality, judging by their play. And these "small" clubs looked great and in shape. All these made me wonder whether Chiefs stand a chance of winning anything this season? Will we be able to get past Downs and Bucs? With what quality? Chiefs haven't brought in Starting XI quality, but instead purchased bench players. I doubt we'll pop any champagne this season. What do you think of Chiefs going into the new season?
