With the chances of lifting trophies escaping the Glamour Boys this season, there seems to be a lot of doom and gloom plaguing Kaizer Chiefs fans. That need not be the case, as you could consider last season and current season as a test drive for Steve Komphela's project.
Chiefs finished fifth and could achieve the same finish by the end of the current season. Overlooking the log standings, you'll see that Steve Komphela's charges didn't lose out on the league because they were outplayed by the opposition, but rather because they struggled to keep a positive mindset, especially in the last few games, dropping points in games that they should have won. Chiefs were also not easy to beat, after going 12 games without losing?
A few good things have come from this season, as Chiefs' weaknesses are easily identified with their lack of a real goal scorer that complements their attacking players. Their current strikers hurt their chances of being league contenders.
The defence is the next problem, the combination of a lack of concentration and mistakes hampered Chiefs' title challenge at crucial stages of the season.
Into a possible third season, Komphela should now have what it takes to win at a club like Chiefs because, just like Rome, championship winning sides aren't built in a day.
