In the space of ten days, Kaizer Chiefs went from being in contention in the league, Nedbank cup and CAF Champions League to being knocked out of the Nedbank cup and now seemingly out of the League race, having lost to platinum stars, and the CAF Champions league, suffering a disappointing home loss to Asec Mimosa.
So this means that Chiefs will end the season with nothing to show for their efforts. While many have pointed the finger at Steve Khomphela, one cannot put the blame solely on his shoulders. Steve inherited an ageing squad from Stuart Baxter, players who are over the age of 30 with the physical rigours of professional football starting to take its toll on these players. Yeye, Gaxa and Parker have been great servants for the Amakhosi, but their performances this season have been underwhelming.
Although not confirmed, it has been reported that the reason Stuart Baxter left Chiefs was because he was not given carte blanche to choose which players he wanted to bring in and merely had to make due with players signed by Bobby. The players Khomphela currently has at his disposal are not bad, but they are not good enough to win the league or even compete in Africa against a struggling Asec Mimosa team.
Recruitment has been the achilles heel of Kaizer Chiefs for the past few years because they consistently miss out on quality and bring in quantity. Ndulula, Mthembu,Manqele, Matovu, Mokgothu, one could go on all day. These players are simply not good enough, so how can Khomphela be expected to win silverware when he doesn't have much quality to work with?
