Steve Komphela is reportedly one of the highest-paid coaches in the PSL and the cost of sacking him from the Kaizer Chiefs bench is unbearable.
Since taking over from Stuart Baxter, Komphela’s team hardly displays any enterprising football that the fans were promised. The Chief’s way that was the talk of the town is non-existence and what only remains is the negative approach, an ill-structured team that at times practices unattractive tactics, with formations that are overloaded with defenders. All this formation indicates is the struggles for consistency in the technical team.
Kaizer Motaung and his son, Bobby, knows that they may have made a mistake by giving Komphela a huge salary package, which is now hunting them. They might want to fire Komphela but, with the salary he is earning, Chiefs can’t take the chance of buying out his contract. Both the chairman and the football manager are bound to take the financial repercussions and therefore adopt a supportive approach to the coach who they are unhappy with.
Komphela is in charge of Chiefs not because is the right man, but because of the contractual blunder made by the chairman and his son. As a result, Chiefs cannot afford to dismiss Komphela.
As painful as it may be, Komphela is an unwanted man at Naturena. However, he holds the keys to the exit door. He still wants his money, even it seems he will finish every season with an empty cabinet. He knows that Chiefs want to fire him and will never resign.
