The PSL is one of the worst leagues when it comes to scoring goals, and the strikers can’t score 15 in 30 league games. Yet the main reason behind the goalscoring problem is yet to be found.
We had strikers with 15+ goals in a season back when Richard Henyekane (may his soul rest in peace) was still around and playing for Arrows. In the 2008/09 season it was him and Khenyeza, and then Mphela in 2009/10. They scored 18+ goals each and all of them were born in Mzansi. They were followed by Nomvethe with 19 goals in 2011/2 season, but since then, we’ve hardly seen a prolific, deadly striker. The worst ever season was when Parker claim the award in 2013/14 with only 10 goals in 27 games.
Last season’s NFD’s top goalscorer outscored all PSL strikers. The Baroka FC striker finished the season with 18 goals, while the PSL’s top goalscorer, Collins Mbesuma, finished on 14 goals Thabiso Kutumela’s performances attracted many top tier teams, but Pirates won the race for the striker's signature, and now the question is, can he take the form he shown in the NFD last season to the PSL? Can Thabiso Kutumela score 15+ PSL goals? There are no doubts about his qualities and ability to score goals, the former Baroka man has a good eye for goal.
Can he overcome the PSL goalscoring problem? Henyekane, Mphela, Khenyeza and Nomvethe have done it. Gabuza scored two goals in with Ndoro scoring seven last season, so this should be Kutumela's season.
Should Muhsin put his faith in Kutumela? Is he ready to be Bucs’ main man and play ahead of Gabuza, Ndoro and Motupa?
