Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs recently agreed to participate in a pre-season encounter, named the Shell Helix Ultra Cup, which will in effect, replace the Carling Black Label Cup.
The cup looks up to standard and is appreciated, but as supporters, we have been calling for the classic Telkom Charity Cup to be reinstated. We don't care about the sponsorship, but rather hope for the chance to build excitement in the run up to the new season, by voting for our favourite teams to participate in this annual contest.
No pre-season event nor tournament has come anywhere close to the excitement of the Telkom Charity Cup. Soccer lovers looked forward to the traditional season curtain-raiser which provided good entertainment.
Bring back the Charity Cup in its old format and allow clubs such as Bloemfontein Celtic the chance to compete with the likes of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
What are your thoughts, should the Charity Cup make a return to local football?
