South African Football has been questioned with Bafana Bafana on the verge of not Qualifying for Africa Cup of Nations 2017, that will be held in Gabon.
Honestly South Africa has a "scoring problem", from our PSL teams to our National team! It's been almost five years since a South African born striker scored 20 PSL goals. the last player to score 20 goals was Siyabonga Nomvethe in 2011/12 season for Moroka Swallows.
Currently Prince Nxumalo (Ajax Cape Town) is a South African born top goalscorer with 11 goals in 16 PSL starts, and two assists so far. Followed by Thobani Mncwango (Polokwane City) with 9 goals in 23 PSL games. Then surprisingly follows Bidvest Wits experienced Left winger, Daine Klate with 7 goals in 22 PSL starts, and he has furthermore assisted in 10 occasions. The last South African striker in this season's top scorers list, is Ndumiso Mabena (Platinum Stars) has 7 goals in 18 PSL games, with 2 assists.
In years gone by, We were blessed with Strikers like Daniel Mudau (Sundowns) who scored 24 PSL goals in 1997/98 season, and the following season, Daveyton born striker Pollen Ndlanya (Chiefs) almost equaled Mudau's record, Pollen scored 21 PSL goals.
It's sad that such a talented Nation like South Africa are failing to produce a quality striker.
Will we ever see a South African born striker scoring 30 goals plus, in the Absa Premiership? Or our defenders and goalkeepers are just too good for them?
