The 2016/2017 Absa Premiership season is the one to forget for all four Orlando Pirates goalkeepers that have been used thus far.
Orlando pirates have used four goalkeepers this season and all of them have made terrible errors that ended up costing the club.
Felipe Ovono, the Equatorial Guinean international was heavily criticised after he gifted Bidvest Wits two soft goals during their MTN8 clash last year and the club decided to release him after that.
Brighton Mhlongo also has a nightmare season after he conceded six goals against SuperSport United in a league clash last year. He's tall, but he failed to avoid danger from set pieces. He was trusted as the number one keeper until that night.
Jackson Mabokgwane also conceded six goals against Mamelodi Sundowns and he was caught by a harmless long ball against Bloemfontein Celtic in a league clash. He was sent off with a red card in their loss against Wits this year, where Happy Jele had to be used as his replacement.
Siyabonga Mpontshane was next in line for the Buccaneers number one position and in his first two games, he produced two clean sheets until the horrible mistake he made recently against Baroka. A powerful shot from Baroka's Victor Letsoalo got through his hands and into the back of the net. Against Chippa United, he was easily beaten when Paseka Mako’s ball got between his legs.
This season was terrible for the entire Pirates squad, as they only started to gel as a team recently under the new coach, Kjell Jonevret. It must be very bad for the club’s goalkeeper trainer as all of his trusted soldiers had a miserable season to forget.
