Wits Announce Player Of The Season, Three Winners
Bidvest Wits Celebrate Stars After Difficult Premier Soccer League Season
Bidvest Wits gathered for a private ceremony on Wednesday for the club's annual awards ceremony after what was a difficult 2017/18 season for the outgoing Absa Premiership champions.
The Clever Boys conceded their top-flight crown to Mamelodi Sundowns this term while they also crashed out the Nedbank Cup last-32 and MTN8 semi-finals at the hands of Cape Town City on both occasions.
Gavin Hunt's side also saw their CAF Confederation Cup campaign ended at the second qualifying round, although they did manage to clinch the Telkom Knockout crown and enter the final day of the campaign in the hunt for a place in the top-eight, although their fate is out their hands.
Wits were still able to celebrate the players who were able to rise to the challenges of the campaign in an intimate awards ceremony at the Olives and Plates restaurant on the university's main campus.
When handing over the Coach's Award, which went to Bongani Khumalo, Hunt said, as quoted by the official Wits website: “I would like to give this award to a player who is hard working both on and off the pitch, the most professional footballer and who delivered no matter when he was called upon.”
Meanwhile, Sifiso Hlanti bagged both big awards on the night with the Player of the Season and Players' Player awards.
Wits COO Jonathan Scholls said: “This award [Players' Player] is voted for by each and every player on the team, and this year this player received all the votes except for two. He won by a landslide.”
When handing over the Player of the Season gong, club CEO Jose Ferreira said: “An evergreen presence in the team, a person who embodies everything we stand for as a club.”
Meanwhile, the Young Player Of The Season award was handed to Reeve Frosler.
