UJ Hammer UCT To Go Top
UJ moved to the top of the Varsity Football standings with a comprehensive 6-0 victory over UCT in Soweto.
The unbeaten Johannesburg outfit were far too strong for their Cape rivals who lost by the same margin to NWU in Mafikeng last week and find themselves at the opposite end of the table with just one log point from their five games this season.
UJ took the game to the visitors from the outset, and it took a quality save from UCT goalkeeper Bevan Adonis to deny Sandro Caro the opening goal.
The pressure eventually told when striker Pontsho Nyathi hit a stinging shot on the turn to find the back of the net, giving Adonis no chance.
UCT pressed hard as they looked to force an error, but UJ were enjoying the bulk of possession and looked in control.
The home side would take a 2-0 lead into the break when holding midfielder Karl Clements found the top right corner with a curling shot.
UCT had to make the running in the second half, but UJ continued to dictate terms as the Cape side battled to get hold of the ball.
They soon made it 3-0 as Ruben De Freitas burst into the box after beating a few defenders and buried his shot in the bottom left corner.
That left UCT with a mountain to climb, but instead of pushing for a goal they found themselves having to deal with the constant waves of attacks from a rampant UJ side.
UJ made it 4-0 when striker Sandro Claro poked another goal past Adonis, and it was replacement striker Lumkile Dava who came up with the fifth after finding plenty of space in the box.
The final blow came in extra time as defender Matthew Edwards rose highest to nod home a header and hand UCT their second consecutive 6-0 defeat.
