Madibaz Leave Limpopo Behind

NMMU scored all of their goals in the second half to secure a 3-0 victory over Limpopo in Port Elizabeth.

The win sees the Madibaz move up to third place on the Varsity Football standings, ahead of UP-Tuks and Kovsies on goal difference, whilst Limpopo continue to search for their first win in the competition.

The home side took control of the game early on as they pushed forward and put Limpopo under pressure in their own half.

Limpopo absorbed the pressure fairly well and held their shape as they managed to shut down the attacking forays from their hosts.

The visitors started to show a bit more confidence on the ball and produced an opportunity on the counter-attack, but NMMU goalkeeper Lyndsay Jennings was equal to the shot from wide on the right.

The Madibaz created a few scoring chances of their own towards the end of the first half but could not find the finishing touch and the game remained goalless at the half-time break.

The Eastern Cape side made a determined start to the second half and moved the ball forward at pace, with Lukhanyo Rasmeni sending a header straight at Limpopo goalkeeper Jonathan Gole.

Limpopo battled to create momentum in NMMU territory, and their attacking threats were limited to counter-attacks and set-pieces as the Madibaz continued to call the shots.

They would eventually be rewarded for their dominance when replacement Kieran Koert punished Limpopo for a defensive mix-up to give his side a 1-0 lead.

It was 2-0 shortly afterwards, when a floated ball from defender Onela Beqezi caught Limpopo goalkeeper Jonathan Gole off his line and put his side firmly in the driving seat.

With Limpopo forced to attack the game opened right up and NMMU took advantage when a square ball from Koert was buried by Simamkele Thobi to make it 3-0.

That was how it ended as NMMU gave their play-off hopes a major boost ahead of the final round of league action next week.
