Wits Coach: Moments Like These Can Define Young Careers

Wits University have already surpassed any previous teams in the Varsity Football competition, after progressing to the semi-finals, where they will face neighbours and table-toppers, the University of Johannesburg in the Highveld derby.

Wits claimed the fourth position on the log, despite their 2-4 defeat to Tshwane University on Thursday. TUT will face UP-Tuks in an all Pretoria second semi-final.

“I really love this game. Football really cannot be scripted. Two derbies for the semi-finals. It doesn’t get bigger than this for the boys. It is moments like these that can define their young careers,” Haskins said.

“It would have been nice to take some momentum into the semi-final, but it is a once-off game. A knockout match. It is a chance for these boys to make history for the campus.”

Wits were defeated 2-1 in the league fixture against their city rivals at UJ’s Soweto campus and will have to return to that venue for the play-off. UJ, though, also lost their final league encounter 1-0 to North-West University on Thursday.

“We don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves for UJ finished on top of the log, and should head into the semi-final as favourites. They are a talented squad with some superb players, but we took a lot of learning from the league match,” Haskins said.

“I think we are evenly matched in terms of technique and ability, but it all comes down to our mental space. Mentally we need to be ready for the challenge. I am expecting a tight game, and like I said earlier … its knockout football now and nothing that’s happened before matters. It will come down to the team that wants it more on the day!”
