Champs UWC Leave TUT Behind

UWC scored two second-half goals to hand TUT a 2-1 victory and claim the Varsity Football title in front of their home fans in Cape Town on Thursday.

The Cape side were dominant in the second half as they came from behind to claim their first-ever Varsity Football title.

TUT started brightest and launched a number of early raids into UWC territory as the home side were forced to absorb some early pressure.

They capitalised in the eighth minute when Masonwabe Sokanyile fired a stunning free kick past UWC goalkeeper Reon October to give his side the lead.

UWC had their first clear opportunity on goal from a free kick soon afterwards, but Phiwokuhle Mpalala could not find the finishing touch at the back post.

The home side kept the pressure on and surged into opposition territory where TUT's Sipho Sibiya was shown the first yellow card of the match for a heavy tackle on Marchello Viglino.

UWC's Keenan Davis claimed the second card of the match before long, although TUT were not able to find the target from the resulting free kick.

They would take that 1-0 lead into half-time as they dominated the rest of the opening 45 minutes with the wind at their backs.

The hosts made a determined start to the second half as they looked for a way back into the game in front of their enthusiastic fans.

They created a great opportunity when a pinpoint cross found Ryan Steer at the back post, but he put his header wide of the mark.

However they did not have to wait long for the equaliser as Davis buried a header from a corner to make it 1-1 as the UWC Stadium erupted.

UWC had their tails up and they continued to pile the prssure on TUT who had been left stunned, with the pressure eventually resulting in a second goal from replacement Josh Silent who provided a clinical finish from a strong run down the left to put his side 2-1 up to the delight of the home crowd.

TUT pushed all of their players forward in the final stages as they desperately tried to find another goal, but it was not to be as UWC held on for victory.
