For Mamelodi Sundowns players, their biggest threat ahead of Sunday’s game against Absa Premiership log leaders is the likely combination of Khama Billiat and Leonardo Castro, two players who were once match winners at Chloorkop.
Now on the opposite side and having terrorised Sundowns in the Shell Helix Ultra Cup with a 4-2 drubbing, Billiat scoring one and setting up Castro for his hat-trick, defender Thapelo Morena has warned his teammates to be alert.
“They know each other very well, but for us we have our strengths and we know which players can help the team also. Our defence will win the game for us and they are going to be important during the game,” said Morena.
He gave a little insight as to how the Brazilians can minimise the threat posed by the duo, but Billiat always has a trick up his sleeve.
“We know how they play and we know their strengths – they look to play more on the break. But we need to convert when we get the chances. Khama likes to play on the defenders’ shoulders and he is quick as well as good on the ball. Those are the things we have to look at and if I have to face him as a right back or a winger then we need to find ways to exploit them as well. There are certain areas where we can hurt them, but I can’ disclose publicly,” Morena explained the likely game plan.
