Khumalo Sheds Light On SuperSport Future

The Siya crew recently reported that SuperSport United are set to make a decision on the future of veteran defender Bongani Khumalo. Now, the defender has opened up on what the future holds for him.

Khumalo, 34, has undergone a transition this season that has seen him predominantly feature off the bench to bring much-needed stability to the SuperSport defence in the latter stages of matches.

This is evident in the numbers, which show that of the 15 league appearances the former Bafana Bafana captain has made, nine of them has been as a sub, while he has started a further six matches. Although he has featured prominently in the team’s cup campaign making three starts in total.

The defender, who cut his teeth at Matsatsantsa before securing a blockbuster move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2010, will see his contract with the club come to an end on June 30 – raising speculation over whether he will continue with the Tshwane giants next season.

Speaking exclusively to the Siya crew, Khumalo has shed some light on what the future holds for him in the twilight of his career.

“Yeah, it’s always a conversation, isn’t it? It’s always a talking point and I supposed it is common news, but there’s not much I can say about it really,” Khumalo told the Siya told the crew at SuperSport’s Huawei partnership announcement on Thursday.

“I’ve always lived my life and played my career year by year, you go one more, you get another one, you go again and right now it’s a point of reassessing before going again and I’ll repeat that this is a point of reassessing, but we’ll see where we are... very soon we’ll know what’s happening.

“Either way, my heart is open I will say – I do want to play football for another year, and we’ll see where the journey takes me next.”
