With all eyes on red-hot Peter Shalulile to see if he will break Collins Mbesuma’s 17-year-old record of 25 league goals in a season, Mamelodi Sundowns’ next opponents this weekend, Stellenbosch FC, will be planning to stop the Namibian international, though he is not the only threat for the Winelands side.
The Western Cape outfit will travel to ABSA Tuks Stadium to face the league champions with the aim of cementing their place in the top eight on the log.
A lot has been said in recent weeks about Shalulile possibly finally breaking Mbesuma’s long-standing record, and while the 28-year-old has been on form this season having netted 22 league goals so far.
But, the striker isn’t the only marksman who Stellies coach Steve Barker is worried about going into the match.
“I wouldn’t really say so (that Sundowns are reliant on Shalulile) just considering they’ve got other match-winning players in their team. You know, Aubrey Modiba has now scored in his last three matches, they’ve got people like Themba Zwane and other strikers that they can use. But obviously, negating a player like Shalulile does take away a lot of the threat that they do bring, but it doesn’t make our task any easier. So, yes, we definitely have to take care of him but also be aware of the other strengths that they have,” said Barker, speaking through the club’s media department.
