Skelem: Why The Goals Have Dried Up…

After taking the country’s top-flight by storm in his first season, Stellenbosch FC’s Leletu Skelem appears to be suffering from ‘second season’ syndrome, but the talented youngster has opened up on why the goals have dried up this campaign.

Many players experience a breakout season in their maiden campaign, and they struggle to replicate that form when the ‘unknown entity’ tag falls away.

In a recent interview in edition 1216 of Soccer Laduma, the 22-year-old reveals the reason behind his sudden dip in form that has seen him score just one goal for the Cape outfit this season.

“I have to train more because it is not like I’m not doing that much more or not getting the training sessions,” Skelem explained.

“But all I can say is that I think it’s the change of tactics from the team. We try to have those combinations with the new players because I think they are also the ones that came with a different style to how we were playing last season and you can see that this season we are more on the ball and stuff. Last season, we were using our strength, so now we are trying to adapt to other people’s strength. So, ja, I think that is the main thing that we have been trying to work on”

Meanwhile, the pacey attacker has commented on reports linking him with a move to one of Gauteng’s big guns who are said to be keen on his services.

“To be honest, I haven’t gotten anything that has come to me. I know nothing about the contract and the offers and stuff. For me, even if it can be something like that, I cannot say that’s the main instance. I cannot say that, because if the team comes with a contract, I will never turn my back on the team that I have a contract with, you see. So, in order for it to happen that I have to move to another team, that contract must be revealed and there must be a talk that they want to sign me, without having chats behind the back, instead of talking to the club,” Skelem added.
