Being given the nickname ‘Randfontein Ronaldinho’ brings a bit of pressure, but how did one of South Africa’s brightest football talents end up with being compared to the Brazilian legend?
Linda Motlhalo may be just 21-years-old, but the midfielder has already taken plenty of steps on the footballing ladder having turned out in South Africa, the United States, China, and now Sweden – never mind the fact that she made her FIFA Women’s World Cup debut last year.
The former JVW FC star had a dream start to life in Scandinavia as she came off the bench to bag a brace on her debut back in February, however the Coronavirus pandemic has meant that she hasn’t been able to add to her tally just yet.
Soccer Laduma caught up with the youngster from her home in Sweden, where she explained how she ended up with her interesting nickname.
Motlhalo explained, “It was actually Christopher, my agent… We were just talking, and he was like, ‘People call you Problem Child, people call you Mimi, but I don’t see that, I see a Randfontein Ronaldinho and I’m going to start that name’.
“That’s how it came about, (but) yeah, it brings pressure! I mean Ronaldinho, that’s a lot!”
