Sekhukhune's Boost For Promotion Confirmed

Sekhukhune United have received a major boost in their battle to secure promotion to the DStv Premiership next season.

According to their legal representative, Karabo Tshabuse, the GladAfrica Championship outfit have a date in court on June 3 in their attempts to have the Premier Soccer League enforce the ruling that was handed down by Advocate Hilton Epstein.

It was more than a week ago that Epstein, acting as SAFA arbitrator, decided that Sekhukhune be awarded the three points from their match against Polokwane City on January 2 given the latter had breached the NSL u/23 rule.

While the game, played under protest, did not have a big impact on the championship at the time, it did earlier this month when Sekhukhune were now in a two-horse race for promotion alongside Royal AM.

Epstein’s ruling gave Sekhukhune the advantage heading into the season finale last weekend – it took them level on points with Royal AM and top of the table because of a superior goal difference, meaning they only needed to win their remaining fixture to be promoted!

However, the PSL did not enforce the award and announced it would be challenging Epstein’s judgement in court.

Royal AM finished the campaign a point clear instead.

“As you know, Polokwane City have removed their application from the roll and asked for a new date, which is June 8,” said Tshabuse, explaining that City, with the PSL also applying as co-applicant, were hellbent on overturning the ruling.

“But my client Sekhukhune has now filed an urgent application and the date has been set for June 3. We feel it is unfair to our client to wait when the award by the arbitrator has in fact not been set aside, and is off full force and effect. It must therefore be enforced.”

This is essentially a game changer for Sekhukhune, who would have to be crowned title winners if things go their way in court next week.

According to a letter from the league’s acting CEO Mato Madlala, the PSL has suggested the date for the promotion/relegation play-offs to also be moved to June 13.

It now remains to be seen which of the two sides between Sekhukhune and Royal AM join another top-flight outfit in the play-offs next month.
