According to reliable Siya sources, Kaizer Chiefs are understood to have had a breakthrough in their pursuit of Stellenbosch skipper Zitha Kwinika.
Soccer Laduma first reported in January that the Glamour Boys were eyeing the defender, who happens to be an academy product of the Soweto giants but had been sold outright to Chippa United around 2015.
Kwinika has grown in stature, this being evident during his spell at Bidvest Wits before the club was sold two years ago and forced the player – and several of the club’s high profile players – to move on elsewhere.
Indications were that Stellenbosch would be open to parting ways with their captain only if there’s a sizeable offer on the table because the Western Cape-based outfit still have an option on his existing deal.
Basia Michaels, who represents Kwinika, has since confirmed that the option on Kwinika’s contract has been triggered, although she insisted that she had not been approached by Chiefs as the agent to conclude the deal.
“Chiefs haven’t spoken to me about Zitha to this day, I’ve seen the speculation and the talks about it. What I can confirm to you is that Stellenbosch FC have exercised the option to have him as their player for the 2022/2023 season,” Michaels said via text to the Siya crew when approached for comment.
However, the Siya crew has it on good authority that Amakhosi have made a breakthrough and it does appear as though Kwinika could be returning to Naturena should all the finer details be agreed to in the coming weeks.
The transfer window officially opens on July 1.
