Leicester Sink Chelsea To Move Top

Premier League

Result: Leicester City 2-0 Chelsea

Date: 19 January 2021

Venue: King Power Stadium

Leicester City moved to the top of the Premier League table after registering a 2-0 win over struggling Chelsea on Tuesday night.

Reece James, Kai Havertz, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham were all recalled by Blues manager Frank Lampard while the Foxes were unchanged.

Wilfred Ndidi gave Leicester a perfect start after getting the opener in the sixth minute with a stunning half-volley from the edge of the box that came off the post and went in.

Chelsea were fortunate not to go 2-0 down in the 15th minute after James Maddison had enough space on the edge of the box to fire a left-footed strike at goal that came off the crossbar.

The visitors thought they had won a penalty with five minutes left of the first stanza after the referee initially pointed to the spot after a challenge by Jonny Evans on Christian Pulisic but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) corrected the decision, as the challenge was just outside the box.

Frank Lampard's troops were punished for lack of concentration as immediately thereafter they were caught on a counter-attack, with Maddison going clear on the left side of the box and fired a strike across Mendy to give Leicester a two-goal cushion heading to the break.

The Foxes continued to create chances coming from the break as James Justin should have added a third goal four minutes inside the second stanza with a free-header at the back post that missed the bottom corner slightly wide.

With Chelsea hardly creating chances at the other end of the pitch, Lampard made a double change in the 67th minute as Hakim Ziyech came on for Havertz while Timo Werner replaced Hudson-Odoi.

Werner thought he had pulled a goal back for the visitors in the last five minutes after steering a fre-kick by Ziyech past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel but the goal was disallowed for a marginal offside.

In the end, Leicester held on for the win and a clean sheet that took them to the top of the log by one point while Chelsea dropped to eighth.
