The Bucs Record Chiefs Are Chasing…
Kaizer Chiefs won the last Carling Black Label Cup when it took place a couple of years ago, but they still need a win this year if they’re to equal Orlando Pirates' record…
The Glamour Boys won 1-0 in 2017 thanks to a goal from Bernard Parker, and also the one in 2016 when Erick Mathoho and Lewis Macha secured them a 2-0 victory – it’s actually been almost four years since the Buccaneers scored past Chiefs in the CBL Cup at all, and they’ve only scored twice.
Pirates won four of the first five meetings in this game since it began in 2011, and – even though they needed penalties on all four occasions – are one victory ahead of their Soweto rivals who have won it three times (none via penalty shootout).
This season’s game – which serves as part of the clubs’ pre-season training – will offer the chance to Mathoho and Parker to become the first player to score in the clash twice, with all of the eight goals so far having been scored by different players (six of whom have since left their respective club).
The game is due to take place on July 27, around a month after the two teams return for their pre-season, and both Ernst Middendorp and Milutin Sredoejevic will be eager to pick up a confidence boost for their side before the 2019/20 season proper gets underway.
