Only “five, maybe six, players” will leave Kaizer Chiefs in the coming weeks, assistant coach Shaun Bartlett has confirmed.
Speaking to the media at the launch of the Carling Black Label Cup yesterday, Bartlett not only confirmed that – as far as he is aware – he and head coach Ernst Middendorp will be staying on, but he also revealed the number of players expected to leave Naturena following a poor 2018/19 season.
He did not mention any names, though the Siya crew has reported recently that Mario Booysen, Ryan Moon and possibly Leonardo Castro are among a list of players that could be offloaded by the club.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a big list – probably five, maybe six players,” said Bartlett when asked if Chiefs fans should expect wholesale changes.
“We’ve also got to see which players haven’t played a part over the last six months or even the last season. And then we will see how we move forward, but I don’t expect there to be a big list.”
The club has already cut ties with Virgil Vries, Hendrick Ekstein, Khotso Malope, Bhongolwethu Jayiya and Gustavo Paez.
Amakhosi finished the season outside the Top Eight for the first time in 12 years and lost out on the Nedbank Cup title to TS Galaxy in the final two weekends ago, making the NFD outfit the first lower division team to win the top flight tournament.
