Tinkler Hits Out After Being Shown The Middle Finger
Eric Tinkler looked solemn as he addressed the media following SuperSport United’s loss in the CAF Confederation Cup final, hitting out at TP Mazembe for a lack of respect.
Mazembe’s Kabaso Chongo showed Tinkler and his bench the middle finger after his sending off in the encounter on Saturday evening, angering Matsatsantsa as the Congolese club ate away at the clock on the way to victory.
Tinkler, who now has three CAF runners-up – one in the Champions League and two in the CCC – believes that actions such as Chongo’s are to the detriment of African football.
He told the media, “The motivation to win a continental title is always there, but also sometimes, certain things that happened today that are to the detriment of African football if I must be entirely honest.
“I think that we are moving in the wrong direction if we continue with it. But the motivation is there. I want to win things on the continent. Obviously there are things that are happening that makes one extremely despondent on a personal level. Today we weren’t shown respect.
“We are expected to show humility and respect when we go out of our country. People need to come to our country and show us the same humility and respect. They didn’t do that today.”
SuperSport were unable to make their away goal in Lubumbashi count as Mazembe held on to a 0-0 draw to become the first team since CS Sfaxien nearly a decade ago to retain the CCC title.
