Phala: “When I Lifted My Head, It Was In The Net…”

Phala: “When I Lifted My Head, It Was In The Net…”

By Soccer Laduma - Sep 24, 2017 07:45 PM
Thuso Phala isn’t afraid of scoring in big games… He’s been on the scoresheet in cup finals and for Bafana Bafana, but few have been as dramatic as his second goal in Ndola yesterday.

The 31-year-old winger broke ZESCO United hearts in the 92nd minute of Saturday’s CAF Confederation Cup final, smashing home from close range in what was practically the last kick of the game.

He’d already levelled things up in the first half after ZESCO took an early lead, and Eric Tinkler’s heart will have been in his mouth when Bradley Grobler’s flick on made it’s way through to the speedster at the back post.

“Obviously at that moment of the game I knew that this was the last chance for us to get a goal,” Phala tells the Siya crew in Zambia. “I just – in my mind – thought that this goal is so important… I didn’t think of anything else but the goal. I looked down and I took a shot, and when the ball left my feet I was already thinking about a goal. Luckily when I lifted my head the ball was in the net.”

It’s another first for SuperSport as their heroic efforts in the CCC continue… They fought back from 2-0 down in the DRC against TP Mazembe to get a draw before being applauded off the field, and scored big goals in big moments to make sure they got this far.

Phala thinks that those results have played a part in them reaching a continental semifinal for the first time, and he told the crew, “This tournament has really brought us together and improved the fighting spirit of the team. What we’ve been through in Africa has really shown that we’re a good team that play well together. Hard work brings luck, and luck has been on our side sometimes. We’ve learnt a lot in African competition.”

With MC Alger and Club Africain playing tonight (Alger have a 1-0 lead), Matsatsantsa know that they’re heading to North Africa, but Phala doesn’t care whether they end up in Algeria or Tunisia.

He said, “I think there’s no preference, both of the countries are far so we know we’re going to be travelling, and we know they play a similar brand of football – like we saw from Wydad Casablanca against Sundowns. They all play a similar brand, and it’s going to be a really tough one.

“We’re playing at home, we know that we must not concede, and luckily we’re playing at home first, so we know what to expect. We’ll be watching them both tonight and try and learn as much as we can before the weekend’s game.”

The first leg of the semifinal – in South Africa – will take place next weekend.

I've always admired your talent way back at Platinum Stars. I had thought Mr Khoza was going to bring you at bucs. Your combination with Rantie and Villa was always something I relished. Nonetheless well done Phalafala.
