Permutations – How Chiefs Can Progress In The CCC…
Kaizer Chiefs may have been beaten in Zambia in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup playoff encounter, but all is not lost for the Glamour Boys going into this weekend.
Chiefs flew back to South Africa yesterday reeling from a 3-1 defeat at the hands of ZESCO United in Ndola, and while their immediate focus will be with AmaZulu for tomorrow, they will have one eye on their chances of continental progression.
The defeat to ZESCO will no doubt have been a disappointment for Ernst Middendorp and his troops, however the fact that they were able to pick up an away goal – through Khama Billiat – does give them some hope ahead of the second leg.
That goal from the Zimbabwean means that any score of 2-0 or better will see them progress, though they will also have to be wary of the likes of Jesse Were finding his way through their backline once again.
As always, away goals will count for double if the scores are level at the end of 90 minutes, and the only result that could lead to a penalty shootout would be if the Amakhosi matched the 3-1 result from the first leg.
Any result in which Chiefs win by three clear goals will see them reach the group stages of the CCC, while the only two-goal margin that is good enough is 2-0. Anything else – such as a 1-0, 4-2 etc – will see them crash out as ZESCO progress. The Zambians have only lost by more than one goal on four occasions since the start of 2017 in all competitions, so it won't be an easy feat.
Middendorp and Billiat have both spoken of their confidence in getting the job done despite their first leg defeat, and they will be looking forward to the culmination of the tie at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.
