SuperSport United failed to secure a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, despite claiming a 2-1 win over Gor Mahia in the second leg on Wednesday evening.
The Kenyans headed into the second leg with an advantage, having won the first leg 1-0 over two weeks ago.
Sipho Mbule almost opened the scoring for United in the 15th minute after left-back Onismor Bhasera had worked his way up on the left wing but his strike could not find the target.
Bhasera was influential for the hosts towards the 25th minute with his overlaps on the left wing and crosses into the area, but United could not take full advantage.
Thabo Mnyamane had a chance to break the deadlock for Kaitano Tembo’s charges on the half-hour mark from a free-kick on the edge of the box but his strike was saved by Gor shot-stopper Boniface Oluoch.
Five minutes into the second half, Dylan Stoffels was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet as his curling strike from just outside the box was parried away by Oluoch.
Matsatsantsa got the breakthrough a minute before the hour as Gor conceded an own goal to make it 1-1 on aggregate.
The celebrations for the home side were short-lived, though, as Gor Mahia got the equaliser almost immediately after the restart, meaning SuperSport needed two more goals to progress.
Thabo Mnyamane gave United the lead on the night again in the 68th minute with a wonderful strike to make it 2-1.
Time was running out for Matsatsantsa, while Mnyamane hit the post with five minutes remaining in the second half.
In the end, United could not get the third goal in the closing stages and crashed out of the competition.
