SuperSport United recorded a 0-0 draw with Petro de Luanda in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup first-round tie in Angola.
Caretaker coach Kaitano Tembo rested a number of first-team regulars, which included the likes of Ronwen Williams, Dean Furman, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Thabo Mnyamane.
Matsatsantsa applied pressure in the early stages of the match, with their main threat coming from crosses provided by Aubrey Modiba and Siyabonga Nhlapo on the wings.
Modiba nearly opened the scoring for the visitors in the 10th minute with a strike from just outside the box following some neat play but his effort could not find the target.
Sipho Mbule had another chance for United in the 23rd minute from range but he got under the ball in his strike and it sailed over the bar.
The momentum that Kaitano Tembo's charges had was interrupted by a water break and they were struggling to find their rhythm thereafter.
The latter stages of the opening half were scrappy, with both sides struggling to keep possession and the first stanza ended goalless.
Petro de Luanda were a completely different side in the beginning of the second half as they peppered United with waves of attack.
Matsatsantsa goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse was playing a crucial role towards the hour in keeping his side in the game with some crucial saves to deny the home side the lead.
Tembo altered the team's shape with 20 minutes remaining by taking off striker Darren Smith and bringing on defender Onismor Bhasera. Mbule was also replaced by fellow youngster Luke Le Roux.
Modiba had a chance to break the deadlock for United 10 minutes before time after turning his marker inside the box but his strike went over the bar.
It was still an open game with five minutes left to play, although Matsatsantsa were more wary to concede late on and were retreating deep in their box.
In the end, neither side could find the winner as they settled for a goalless draw.
Here's how they lined up:
SuperSport: Pieterse, Kekana,Gould, Egwuekwe, Boateng, Mokoena, Mbule, Webber,Nhlapo, Modiba, Smith.
Subs: Williams, Le Roux, Bhasera, Stoffels.
