Wits & Smouha Play Out Stalemate

CAF Confederation Cup

Result: Bidvest Wits 0-0 Smouha

Date: 08 April 2017

Venue: Bidvest Stadium

Bidvest Wits and Smouha could not be separated, as they played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup qualifier.

The Clever Boys saw a lot of the ball in the early stages of the first half, although they didn't really create much going forward.

Wits' best chance at goal arrived after 32 minutes when Elias Pelembe's free-kick found Gabadinho Mhango, who headed over the crossbar from close range.

It also proved to be a quiet half for Wits goalkeeper, Moeneeb Josephs, as he was not forced into any threatening saves in the opening 45 minutes.

The score remained goalless as the sides entered the halftime break.

Wits continued to push for an opening goal in the second half and went close in the 51st minute, as Mhango fired just over the crossbar, before Josephs pulled off a fine save two minutes later.

Hunt opted for a double change after the hour-mark, as Sifiso Myeni and Phakamani Mahlambi replaced Pelembe and Cuthbert Malajila.

The Clever Boys nearly went ahead after 69 minutes when Mahlambi went close with an effort from distance, before Pule forced the Smouha goalkeeper into a fine save a minute later.

The Absa Premiership outfit pushed for the opener in the closing stages, with Pule going close with a header.

However, neither side could break the deadlock as they head into the second leg with everything to play for.

Here's how they lined up:

Wits: Josephs, Khumalo, Frosler, Monare, Pelembe (Myeni 60'), Pule, Ntshangase, Mhango, Malajila (Mahlambi 60'), Gaxa, Motshwari.
