Hunt Outlines Wits’ ‘Major Problem’

It wasn’t the best of days for Bidvest Wits as they got their CAF Confederation Cup group stage underway today, and their head coach has admitted that they have a ‘major problem’.

The Clever Boys drew 0-0 at home to Horoya AC on Sunday evening as they picked up their first-ever point in any CAF interclub competition group stage, but Gavin Hunt was disappointed not to pick up all three after the Guineans managed to keep them at bay for 90 minutes at Dobsonville Stadium.

Wits haven’t scored from open play in 270 minutes now having lost to SuperSport United, drawn 1-1 – thanks to a Thabang Monare penalty – with Highlands Park, and now shared the spoils with Horoya, and they’ll need to change that if they’re to progress into the CCC knockout stages.

Speaking to the club’s social media team after the 0-0 in Soweto, Hunt said, “I think they’re the happier of the two teams with the draw, that’s for sure… We’re very disappointed, I think we had enough opportunities to win the game and obviously they played a lot on the counter - which was expected - and they sat in and dug in. They wanted a point and you could see it.

“We had to be better around the final third, which we weren’t. We had opportunities, but you’ve got to score - it’s a major problem.”

Next up for Wits is a clash with Djoliba in Mali as they aim for their first three points.
