Bucs’ Retired Jersey Numbers Return For CAF, Star Handed 10

Orlando Pirates’ retired jersey numbers are set to make an on-field return as the club in the club's CAF Champions League campaign this year.

The Buccaneers will be at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening for the beginning of their Champions League campaign with a match against Light Stars FC from Seychelles.

Having already confirmed that they have registered 27 players for the start of the continental competition, Bucs have now announced that the club’s retired jersey numbers will be used as per competition rules.

Retired Pirates’ jersey numbers are 10, 13 and 22. Vincent Pule is Bucs’ star who has been handed jersey number 10 to use for Champions League matches, while number 13 has been given to Abel Mabaso.

Bucs took to the club’s official website to explain how the whole process of jersey numbers came about and have also confirmed which numbers each of the registered players have been given.

“When the Buccaneers open their CAF Champions League campaign on Wednesday evening, there will be some notable differences to the playing jersey numbers, relative to what you will have been accustomed to since the start of the 2018/19 football season. The rules according to the Confederation of African Football, for all continental tournaments allows for a maximum of 30 registered players, all sporting the numbers 1-30, and without names on the jerseys,” confirmed Pirates on the club’s official website.

“With this in mind, the previously unused Orlando Pirates jersey numbers 10, 13 and 22 will once again make an on-field return in this season’s instalment of Africa’s premier club competition.

“The mercurial Vincent Pule will don the famous number 10 jersey, made legendary by former midfielder Jomo Sono, while the number 13 jersey previously donned by Sasha Moleko will be worn by Abel Mabaso,” added Bucs.

“Other jersey number changes will include the players who are usually numbered higher than 30 in the season roster, and these players will don the numbers currently vacated by the unregistered squad players for this phase of the competition.
