Downs’ Captain Talks Winning The Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns Take Aim At Togolese Opponents In Champions League

By Soccer Laduma - Jul 13, 2018 04:32 PM

Mamelodi Sundowns are finalising their preparations to take on their opponents from Togo in the CAF Champions League.

The Brazilians will play against AS Togo-Port on Tuesday. Having been hard at work during their pre-season, Downs look set to continue with their campaign in the prestigious continental competition.

Downs’ captain Hlompho Kekana says the team is aiming for a win.

“We had a break. It was good for us to be away from football a little bit. We are back now. It’s back to business. We want (to) try and start with a good run by winning the match in Togo so that we are in a good space in the group. A win will give us five points and we will be second in the group,” Kekana told Downs’ official website.

With the Brazilians already in the group stages of the Champions League, Pitso Mosimane and the team will want to go all the way like they have done in the past when they won the competition.

“We are aware of the standards that we have set for ourselves. Doing well in the Champions League is non-negotiable. We know that we are carrying a lot of responsibility as players to try and do well and put the club where it needs to be. We have shown in the past that we are capable of winning trophies. We have to maintain that and make sure that we continue doing well for the club,” concluded Kekana.

Downs and AS Togo-Port will play their match at the Stade General Eyadema in the Togolese capital of Lome on Tuesday afternoon.

Cape Town City boss John Comitis has dismissed media reports that suggested that Lye Lakay has signed for Mamelodi Sundowns. This comes after reports that the winger had completed a move to Sundowns. Comitis, however, insists that no deal has not been completed yet. “I have not sold any player yet, it’s the reporters that jump the gun saying he has signed,” Comitis told Scefe_se2. Comitis confirmed meeting with Sundowns to discuss an offer for Lakay. “I am talking to Sundowns, that part is true, but Wits have also contacted me. I am on my way back to Cape Town right now, I was in Joburg to meet Sundowns and talk about this. “I am going back to Cape Town then will see what he decided over the weekend as to what will happen. But for now he hasn’t signed and we will talk over the weekend.”
