Billiat Nets Late As Downs Fall To Zesco

CAF Champions League

Result: Zesco United 2-1 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 17 September 2016

Venue: Levy Mwanawasa

Mamleodi Sundowns suffered a 2-1 defeat to Zesco United in the first leg of their CAF Champions League semi-final.

The game got off to a good start, with both sides showing their attacking intent in the opening 10 minutes.

The hosts looked more threatening as the half went on, with Jese Were constantly troubling Thabo Nthethe and Wayne Arendse with his pace.

Pitso Mosimane would not have been pleased with the sloppiness from his charges, having seen his players give away possession on numerous occasions.

Without a focal point in the attack, following Leonardo Castro's absence, Sundowns struggled to carve out opportunities in the final third.

Despite Zesco's dominance for most of the half, the score remained goalless as the sides entered the halftime break.

The home side broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half, as Jackson  Mwanza rose above Wayne Arendse to send a glancing header into the far corner.

Zesco doubled their lead two minutes later when Mwanza completed his brace with a clinical finish from close range.

Mwanza's quick-fire double prompted Mosimane to make a double change, as he introduced Teko Modise and Asavela Mbekile after 60 minutes.

Pecry Tau was presented with a glorious chance in the 66th minute, but the midfielder volleyed over the crossbar with only Joseph Banda to beat.

With Sundowns struggling in the attack, Mosimane introduced Anthony Laffor for the final 10 minutes.

However, the Brazilians managed to snatch an away goal in the 87th minute courtesy of a fine finish from Khama Billiat, 2-1.

Here's how they lined up:

Zesco:  Silwimba, Banh, Owino Odhiambo, Oluwafemi, Mwelwa, Mtonga, Chaila, Ching'andu, Mwanza, Were.

Sundowns: Onyango, S.Zwane, Arendse, Nthethe, Langerman, Kekana, Mabunda, Tau, T. Zwane, Dolly, Billiat.
