Ruthless Bucs Take Commanding Lead In CCL

CAF Champions League
Result: Orlando Pirates (Qalinge 24, Mulenga 37, Makola 40', Shonga 90+2', Mntambo 90+4) 5-1 (Mario 16') Light Stars

Date: 27 November 2018

Venue: Orlando Stadium
Orlando Pirates put on a commanding display to thump Light Stars 5-1 in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round clash.
There were a number of changes for the home side as Kudakwashe Mahachi, Jackson Mabokgwane, Augustine Mulenga and Mpho Makola were among the names brought into the side
The Buccaneers enjoyed a promising start to the encounter as Marcelo Da Silva and Meshack Maphangule forced the Light Stars goalkeeper into a fine save.
It was the visitors who got the opening goal against the run of play as Mario Ruvo slipped through the Pirates defence, before slotting past Jackson Mabokgwane on 16 minutes.
The Buccaneers continued to dominate as the half went on and they managed to level matters in the 24th minute when Mahachi's effort was parried into the path of Thabo Qalinge, who made no mistake from six-yards out.
Mulenga was a menace from the onset and he nearly put Pirates ahead after 32 minute with a left-footed curling effort that crashed against the frame of the goal.
The Zambian was not to be denied six minutes later as some good inter-passing allowed Mulenga to slip through on goal and calmly slot into the bottom corner.
There was enough time for Pirates to add a third before the break, with Makola marking his return to the starting line-up with a superb free-kick.
The Buccaneers showed no signs of letting up in the early stages of the second half as Linda Mntambo went close with an effort from the edge of the box.
Mntambo should have made it 4-1 on 71 minutes but the midfielder somehow volleyed over the crossbar from 12-yards out with the net gaping.
With the hosts comfortably leading, Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic opted for a double change as Justin Shonga and Thembinkosi Lorch were introduced for the final 10 minutes.
Despite the comfortable lead, the Buccaneers went in search of more goals as Shonga and Mulenga combined, but the duo were let down by their final balls.
Shonga did manage to round off the scoring in second-half stoppage time with a superb curling free-kick as Pirates took a 4-1 lead.
There was enough time bag a fifth goal as Mntambo registered his name on the score-sheet with a close range strike as Pirates ran out 5-1 winners.
Here's how they lined up:
Pirates: 16. Mabokgwane, 6. Da Silva, 19. Munetsi, 18. Mobara, 29. Mako, 5. Makola, 8. Mntambo, 24. Maphangule (Shonga 78'), 17. Mulenga, 15. Qalinge, 7. Mahachi (Lorch 80').
Subs: 1. Khuzwayo, 23. Maela, 13. Mabaso, 20. Mlambo, 10. Pule, 3. Lorch, 12. Shonga.
