CAF Champions League Report: Mamelodi Sundowns v Wydad Casablanca 05 May 2018

CAF Champions League

Result: Mamelodi Sundowns 1-1 Wydad Casablanca

Date: 05 May 2018

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

Mamelodi Sundowns began their CAF Champions League group stage campaign with a 1-1 draw against defending champions Wydad Casablanca on Saturday.

Masandawana, who were without Percy Tau, were ahead as early as the third minute thanks to an own goal by Wydad's Ibrahim Comara, who turned home Sibusiso Vilakazi's cut-back after Khama Billiat's initial shot was saved.

Wydad looked dangerous on set-pieces inside the first quarter of an hour but Pitso Mosimane’s charges were also threatening on the counter with the pace of Billiat proving a nuisance to the visiting defence.

However, Ismail El Haddad leveled matters for the Moroccans in the 19th minute with a downward header after catching the Sundowns defence napping.

Mohamed Ounnajem almost gave the Red Devils the lead in the 26th minute with a low strike from the edge of the box, but goalkeeper Denis Onyango made a good save at full stretch.

Ibrahim Nekkach should have put Wydad in the lead nine minutes before the break after racing clear on a break with acres of space but fired over the bar one-on-one with Onyango as the sides went into the break level.

Gaston Sirino almost grabbed the lead for Masandawana five minutes into the second stanza with a looping header that caught our Wydad goalkeeper Yassine El Kharraoubi but the ball sailed just over the crossbar.

The Brazilians were breaking with pace going forward and playing early balls after the hour-mark, but were let down by their finishing.

Pitso Mosimane’s charges were building patiently going forward with 20 minutes to play while Wydad were defending with numbers behind the ball, with the hope of catching Sundowns on the counter.

Masandawana were camped in the Red Devils half in the final 10 minutes of the half as they went search of a wining goal, although the Brazilians failed to again bypass the Wydad defence and had to settle for a point in their opening Group C clash.

Here's how they lined up:

Sundowns: Onyango, Langerman, Nascimento, Madisha, Morena, Mabunda, Kekana, Zwane, Vilakazi, Sirino, Billiat.

Subs: Razak, Manyisa, Lebese, Brockie, Ngcongca, Zulu, Soumahoro.

@Mshayiwamateam am not a football fan but a supporter and surely do not owe my belonging to KaboYellow to you, my analysis is filled with independent thinking boosted by football knowledge and experience. By moving away from my points and jump into judging me, it shows that you not my match in terms of football knowledge and unfortunately you cannot buy it, its not a 100% juice. Take this, my name: Gcinumthetho Tshazi, mark it because later you'll have your answer!

@So-Mathabo-KBY My worry is playing 2nd Leg of the quarter final away from home if we manage to make it through to the final. Wydad quality is way below that of 2016 but we too, are going down and the signings that they're making are nothing compared to Dolly, Zungu, Billiat, Modise, Laffour, Pelembe, Onyango etc. well according to what I've seen so far, we heading to one tittle a season again!

You know it's sad to note that many so called football fans on this site are in actual fact intellectually bankrupt football wise ,Pitso is the most decorated coach in SA criticising him from the comfort of your couch shows not only stupidity but it also put your level of thinking to question...im tired of reading comments of people who blog to impress

@Matayitayi : Yes Langerman made a mistake, he is one of my favourite players and I suppose he is tired now, he played all games, and saved us against MU. Mistakes happen, but Onyango should have saved that header, he is quick to sleep without seeing where the ball will go.

"Gaston Sirino almost grabbed the lead for Masandawana five minutes into the second stanza with a looping header that caught our Wydad goalkeeper Yassine El Kharraoubi but the ball sailed just over the crossbar" Reading through this passage shows me clear why people hate Sundowns its simple because of our success SL EDITOR FAILED TO HIDE HIS/HER FEELINGS

@Sandawana 24/7This game could have been won if pitso applied some tactical changes, why not take out khama and introduce brockie, take out morena n introduce ngoma, take out vila/sirino and bring in laffor,But Ngoma & Laffor were not on the bench,Subs: Razak, Manyisa, Lebese, Brockie, Ngcongca, Zulu, Soumahoro.
