Misfiring 'Downs Drop Points In CCL Opener

CAF Champions League

Result: Mamelodi Sundowns 0-0 Saint George

Date: 13 May 2017

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

Mamelodi Sundowns began their CAF Champions League group stage campaign with a 0-0 draw against Saint George on Saturday evening.

Sundowns threatened early on and went close to breaking the deadlock in the fifth minute through Khama Billiat, who saw his close range effort saved by Robert Odongkara.

Pitso Mosimane's charges continued to dictate the tempo in the opening 20 minutes, but the Saint George defence was proving to be a tough nut to crack.

The visitors, meanwhile, were finding it tough to get the ball off the Brazilians and rarely showed desire to close down their opponents.

Chances were hard to come by as the half went on despite Sundowns' dominance, while Kennedy Mweene was virtually a spectator for the opening 45 minutes.

Nevertheless, the score remained goalless as the sides entered the halftime break.

The visitors came out firing in the second half and started seeing of the more ball but their decision-making in the final third was not up to par.

Sundowns squandered a glorious chance to take the lead in the 57th minute as Anthony Laffor lifted the ball to the far post, where Sibusiso Vilakazi managed to slot wide from six-yards out.

Mosimane introduced Yannick Zakri and Percy Tau after the 60-minute mark, as they pushed for an opening goal.

Even with the double substitution, Sundowns were finding it tough to break down the visitors for most of the second half.

The hosts threw on Thapelo Morena in the 81st minute with Anele Ngcongca making way in the closing stages.

However, Saint George managed to frustrate Sundowns in the latter stages and held on for a valuble point on the road.

Here's how they lined up:

Sundowns: 1. Mweene, 20. Ngongca, 32. Madisha, 29. Soumahoro, 4. Langerman, 8. Kekana, 15. Mohomi, 10. Modise, 33. Billiat, 28. Laffor, 11. Vilakazi.
