Late Goal Sinks Downs In Kinshasa

CAF Champions League

Result: AS Vita 1-0 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 10 April 2016

Venue: Stade Tata-Raphael

AS Vita netted in stoppage time to secure a 1-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of their CAF Champions League tie.

The Brazilians got off to an encouraging start and looked a real threat down the left flank with Keagan Dolly's pace.

Dolly continued to threaten down the flank and he carved out a chance Leonardo Castro in the seventh minute, but the striker's effort was blocked off.

Chances were hard to come by in the opening stanza, as both sides struggled with decision-making in the final third.

Although, the home side did go close in the 38th minute, as the AS Vita skipper showed good skill to evade Hlompho Kekana and Themba Zwane, before unleashing a powerful effort that sailed just wide of the upright.

The hosts ended the first half on a stronger note and could have gone into the break ahead, but Morrison somehow placed his effort wide of the upright with only Denis Onyango to beat.

Onyango came to Sundowns' rescue shortly after the halftime break, as the Ugandan shot-stopper rushed off his line to deny Morrison from close range.

Castro was largely ineffective upfront and cut a frustrating at times, so it was no surprise when Mosimane opted to replace the Colombian with Cuthbert Malajila in the 60th minute.

Vita saw more of the ball as the second half went on, but Sundowns had a chance to break the deadlock after the hour, but Dolly ended up firing horribly wide from the edge of the box.

The hosts were on the front foot for most of the second half, although they had to wait until the 85th minute for their next chance, as Morrison blazed just wide from close range.

However, the hosts snatched a win in the second minute of stoppage time, as Onyango failed to deal with Morrison's effort from distance and the ball fell to Kule Mbombo, who converted from three-yards out.

Here's how they lined up:

Sundowns line-up: Onyango, Mphahlele, Langerman, Nthethe, Arsendse, Mbekile, Kekana, Mashaba, Dolly, T.Zwane (S.Zwane 85'), Castro (Malajila 60')
