Downs Looking To Secure 3rd Straight Semi-Final Win

Mamelodi Sundowns will be looking to progress to the CAF Champions League final for only the second time in their history as they play host to Zesco United in tonight’s semi-final.

You can follow the match LIVE in our Match Centre

Sundowns come into the game fresh off of their MTN8 semi-final victory over Chippa United and will be confident of coming away with a positive result today, having scored an all-important away goal in the 2-1 loss against their opponents in Zambia last week.

Despite coming into the new season with a long-running winning streak carried over from the 2015/16 season, Pitso Mosimane may be concerned about the slump that his team have endured during their tightly scheduled games that has seen them participate in three competitions and win only twice in their last six games.

Zesco, on the other hand, will be pleased about having the entire week to prepare for today’s game, but are in similarly poor form, having won only twice in their last six as well.

Neither team has any kind of historical record to look at, however, with last weekend’s match being the only encounter that’s been contested between the teams.

Interestingly, Sundowns have not lost a single semi-final encounter in any competition since way back in November 2014 and they will hope to keep that record up, because they have won the finals of all those competitions in which they reached the semi-finals since their Telkom Knockout loss to Platinum Stars two seasons ago.

Sundowns’ record in semi-finals since 2014

2014 Telkom Knockout semi-final v Platinum Stars: 0-1 loss

2015 Nedbank Cup semi-final v Vasco da Gama: 1-0 win

2015 Telkom Knockout semi-final v SuperSport United: 3-1 win

So Sundowns can count on a near flawless record in semi-finals over the past two years, as well as a temperament that shows that a win today could see the club go on to become only the second South African club to lift Africa’s biggest trophy.

The match will get underway at 19:00 in the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium tonight.
