Keet & Wits Take Aim At First Ever CAF Group Spot

Bidvest Wits Are Targeting A CAF Champions League Group Spot

By Soccer Laduma - Mar 06, 2018 02:00 PM
Bidvest Wits have landed in Angola ahead of the first leg of their CAF Champions League first round game, and are targeting a spot in the group stages for the first time ever.

The Clever Boys struggled in the Absa Premiership at the start of this season, however, have been buoyed by the three trophies that they have won over the last two seasons. Now, with no other trophy to play for in 2017/18, they are taking aim at the CCL.

Wits jetted out to Angola on Monday from Johannesburg prior to their clash with Primeiro de Agosto in Luanda, with the two teams set to lock horns tomorrow afternoon.

The players will then fly back to South Africa after the game before welcoming Agosto to Mzansi next weekend for the second leg at Bidvest Stadium.

Speaking from Angola today, the club’s goalkeeper, Darren Keet, told the Siya crew, “Well I think it’s nice for us to get the away game first, because we can play for a good result and then when coming to the home leg, we know exactly what we need to do to get through to the group stages.

“Obviously getting into the group stages would be fantastic, because that’s where you want to be. You want to play against the best teams that you can, and that’s what the Champions League is about.”

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has confirmed that Italy-based defender Joel Untersee has committed to representing South Africa. Baxter has been in contact with Untersee since his return as senior national team coach in May last year, with the hopes of convincing him to play for his country of birth. The 24-year-old right-back, who is currently on loan at Serie B side Empoli from Juventus, was born in Roodepoort on the West Rand of Johannesburg.
