Bremen Explain PSL Scouting Plans…

Werder Bremen’s sporting director says that they will be keeping their eyes open for South African talent during their midseason training camp in Mzansi this month.

Frank Baumann, a Bremen player himself during his career, says that they do not have anyone in particular in mind when it comes to scouting in the country, explaining that the club doesn’t have the finances to have a permanent scout in Africa.

That doesn’t mean that they won’t be making the most of being in Mzansi though, and the former German international says that they will be monitoring the Absa Premiership games that are taking place during their stay.

He told the media, “Of course, there are several games here in the Premier League this week to watch, and I’ll be having a look here at the teams. Maybe we can find some good players here.

“It’s not possible for us from a financial side that we are making scouting trips to Africa, and South Africa. We have only a few scouts for our first team and so we are focused in Europe. Of course, sometimes we watch national teams, so we know a lot of African players and a few South African players.

“I myself a few weeks ago watched Lebo Mothiba at Strasbourg, I think he’s done very (well) there and scored a lot of goals. He’s an interesting player for a lot of clubs in Europe.”

So could Bremen make a move for Mothiba? Not according to Baumann. He explained, “He’s too expensive for us at the moment. He has a long contract at the moment and we have good strikers ourselves.”

The German outfit was leading Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in a training game on Sunday before it was called off due to bad weather, and will take on Bidvest Wits on Friday before leaving for Germany on January 12th.
