Result: Bayern Munich 2-0 Wolfsburg
Date: 21 December 2019
Venue: Allianz Arena
Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich left it late to secure a 2-0 victory over Wolfsburg at the Allianz Arena on Saturday evening.
The game got off to a fiery start as Bayern's Ivan Perisic forced Koen Casteels into a superb save from distance, while Manuel Neuer was called upon to keep out Felix Klaus at the other end.
David Alaba went close to breaking the deadlock for the home side at the midway point as his stinging strike from distance forced Casteels to make a fine one-handed save.
The tempo slowed down in the latter stages of the first half as Wolfsburg were quite happy to soak up the pressure as the Bavarians dominated possession.
However, Bayern were dealt a blow on the stroke of halftime when Javi Martinez went off after picking up an injury. He was replaced by Jerome Boateng.
The defending Bundesliga champions picked up from where they left off in the first half, but they were met by a stern Wolfsburg defence led by goalkeeper Casteels, who was forced into a couple more saves.
When it seemed as if the clash was heading for a draw, Joshua Zirkzee broke the deadlock with five minutes remaining after turning home a cross from Thomas Muller.
The win was sealed on 90 minutes after Serge Gnabry got his name on the score-sheet, with Robert Lewandowski picking up the assist to seal the victory.
