The Boys Were Just Eating Chips And Chocolates
Mbombela United’s head coach, Vusi Mkhatshwa, speaks proudly to Soccer Laduma’s Peter Raath about important victories.
He also discusses nutrition, training facilities and the fans – with the NFD Focus brought to you by BUCO.
Mkatshwa highlighted how he went about claiming victories over top NFD teams.
“I did my homework properly. We watched Swallows playing against Highlands Park. That’s when I saw their defence wasn’t that quick so we used it to our advantage. Seeing as Dikgang Mabalane has lost a bit of pace, our plan was to put the speedy Sinethemba Jantjie on. This worked well because he scored twice in eight minutes
“With Eagles, I knew the way they defend, attack and build up but Sifiso Thomo – who’s played for Free State Stars, United and FC Cape Town – helped us with a brace. Before those two wins we lost to Witbank Spurs and Baroka FC, despite having played well in those games.
The former Witbank Spurs technical team memeber also touched on how he had to change his players’ nutrition which was not on track.
“I was very shocked to discover the boys were just eating things like chips and chocolates. It was terrible. Being unhappy, I immediately called a meeting where I said, “No, no, no! We need to change the type of food and also look at when we’re eating.” The club organised a nutritionist to teach players how to behave in terms of eating. We spoke a lot about how it would help them in the long run to play football.
“Then, before the league started, the boys were taken on a two-week camp in order to manage their diet properly.
He concluded by applauding their training facilities as well as their fans who turn out in numbers for games.
“The Ingwenyama Conference and Sports Resort in White River where we train has everything you want. All the pro teams camp there due to the good facilities which include two fields, a gym and an auditorium.
“Mbombela has an amazing support base. During home matches, the Kanyamazane Stadium reaches its full capacity of 7 500 supporters. In fact we cannot accommodate all the fans and I’m sure if we went to the Mbombela Stadium that too would be full.
