Big Draw For Banyana’s Champions League Hopefuls
Two South Africans will get the chance to shine on the global stage next month after being pitted against FC Zurich in the Champions League.
Letago Madiba and Rachel Sebati, both of whom play for Belarusian giants, FK Minsk, were pitted against the 2017 and 2018 semifinalists in Friday’s UEFA Women’s Champions League draw after reaching the Round of 32 for the first time since the 2016/17 edition.
The Banyana duo both contributed to Minsk’s progression from the group stages of the UWCL this year – Madiba got her first goal in the competition v Bettembourg – and will now be looking forward to coming up against the Swiss giants in the first leg on September 11 or 12.
Zurich are the reigning champions in Switzerland and have previous experience at this level having reached the Round of 16 in 2014, but Minsk will be buoyed by the fact that their qualification for this stage saw them win all three group games, scoring 16 and conceding just once.
The second leg of the tie will take place on either September 25 or 26, with both Minsk and Zurich hoping to put their name in the hat for the Round of 16 draw that will take place shortly afterwards.
