Banyana Banyana Captain Janine van Wyk has put her side’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the Cyprus Women’s Cup behind her and is optimistic about their second group match against Belgium scheduled for Friday.
The defence midfielder attributed Banyana’s defeat to a lack of game sharpness however assured that they are heading into their clash against Belgium better prepared and in better physical conditioning.
“We put up a good fight against a well-prepared team. We all know that Mexico is one of the good teams in the tournament and are preparing for the World Cup,” Van Wyk told the South African Football Association media.
“We just have to put that behind us and get ready for the next match against Belgium tomorrow.”
“One of the positives is that we managed to get opportunities in front of goals which we didn’t utilise in fact we could have scored two or more goals. The negatives would be that we need to work on some of the defensive mistakes that we committed but, I also believe we had a clear-cut penalty which was not given but it’s one of those things you can’t dwell on,” she concluded.
