Banyana Leap To Highest Ever Position
South Africa’s women’s team, Banyana Banyana, have jumped up the FIFA Rankings to an all-time high of 48th place after qualifying for Rio 2016.
Under Vera Pauw’s mentorship, Banyana have continued to improve on the field, and while their Olympics ended in disappointment without a single win to their name, they have done a lot to improve their reputation in the female game.
Now, in the latest rankings that were released today, Banyana have sustained their rise up the table that has seen them leap from 60th place in 2014 to their highest ever position.
However, despite their improvement there are still questions about Pauw’s future with Banyana going forward, with her tweets earlier this week suggesting that her time with the South African female national team could be at an end.
She said, “I told players and management [SAFA]. I return home now contract and mission has finished. Management wants a press conference. When plans are clear I'll return for that!
“I would never 'sneak out the country' as suggested. Management has asked me to wait until evaluation of my report is made. I respect that.
“It was a tremendous journey and an amazing performance of Banyana Banyana. But I need my family, which is human, right? South Africa, thanks so much!”
