An impressive 2-0 win over Mali last night saw Banyana march into the final of the African Women’s Cup of Nations against Nigeria, securing their spot in France for next year’s global showpiece by doing so.
It is a feat that the South African ladies team has never achieved before, and the head coach and her players will be eager to get to Europe and do the nation proud when they get the chance to come up against the best in the world.
Alongside Banyana, the likes of Chile, Jamaica and Scotland have all qualified for the first time, while the heavyweight nations of Brazil, Germany, Japan, Nigeria, Norway, Sweden, and the United States all kept up their 100% record of reaching every tournament since it began in 1991.
There is a chance that there could be two more debutants – Mali and Fiji – but that will only happen if they can make it past Cameroon and New Zealand in their respective play-off games ahead of the group stage draw taking place on December 8th.
Banyana are in pot four and do have a chance to be drawn against one (or even two) of the former champions, USA, Germany, Norway or Japan.
