Banyana Fall To The Super Falcons

African Women's Championship

Result: Nigeria 2-1 South Africa

Date: 22 October 2014

Venue: Sam Nujoma Stadium

The Super Falcons booked their spot in the final of the African Women's Championship after defeating Banyana Banyana 2-1 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.

Banyana goalkeeper, Thokozile Mndaweni, got off a to a shaky start in between the sticks, failing to hold onto a few crosses, although she did react well to keep out a deflected shot in the 11th minute.

It was proving to be a busy half for the South African shot-stopper, as he came rushing off her line to deny Francisca Ordega in the 15th minute, before thwarting the Falcons striker once again a minute later.

Banyana's Portia Modise came close to breaking the deadlock in the 23rd minute, but her swerving free-kick from 25-yards out sailed just wide of the target.

Ordega had another opportunity to give Nigeria the lead in the 31st minute, but she failed to steer her header on target from six-yards out.

It was Nigeria who took the lead in the 38th minute through a deflected finish from Asisat Oshoala, after some good work by the young Falcons striker.

Oshoala then doubled Nigeria's lead just before the halftime break with a cross-cum-shot that looped over Mndaweni.

Mndaweni came to Banyana's rescue in the 58th minute, the shot-stopper pulled off a fine save to keep out Ugo Njoku's long range effort.

South Africa eventually pulled one back in the 67th minute, as Refiloe Jane's cross from 25-yards out was adjudged to have crossed the line by the assistant referee.

Banyana pushed for an equaliser late on the half, but the Super Falcons defence stood strong and held on for the win.

Vera Pauw's side will now fight it out for a World Cup ticket in the third and fourth play-off against either Ghana or Cameroon.

Here's how they lined-up:
