Tau Set For Early SA Return After Baxter/RUSG Talks
Bafana Bafana are set to receive a boost regarding Percy Tau for their vital African Cup of Nations clash, with the attacker set to return early to South Africa.
Royale Union Saint-Gilloise will play their final game of the regular season on March 3rd before their UEFA Europa League playoffs get underway, and the 24-year-old is due to come back to South Africa for a break after their encounter with Tubize.
The original plan was for the attacker to travel back and forth to prepare for the playoffs inbetween his break and Bafana’s crunch game against Libya, but Siya sources from Europe explained that that would now not be the case.
It is thought that an agreement has been reached between Bafana’s Stuart Baxter and RUSG that will see Tau remain in South Africa, and he could possibly train with an Absa Premiership side in order to keep himself in optimal shape as South Africa prepare to go into battle for a spot at the 2019 AFCON.
When asked about the situation, Baxter explained, “Yes, it’s true. I had a chat with Percy’s club and it was agreed that he could stay home in South Africa and fly with our local boys for the game against Libya rather than going back to Belgium after his break.
“I think it shows the progress that’s been made with regards to relations between Bafana and the clubs where our players play, and this situation is actually one that works out well for everybody. We get him early, he doesn’t have to fly back and forth, and his club get a refreshed player when they return to action. We’re really pleased.”
If Bafana are to reach the continental showpiece later this year then Tau is expected to play a big role in doing so, and this agreement between club and country signifies a boost that could help future relations when it comes to managing player’s situations going forward.
